You can. You will not loose the signal. You can also set up your comp to broadcast the video signal on the trellis and you can watch it from anywhere.

There shouldn't be any problem near it, the only discouraging thing that near may be a slight delay contained by the signal, but it may only be out by a couple of milliseconds. If your video card have more than one place to plug in a monitor (s-video, VGA, DVI etc) consequently I suggest you use DVI but VGA works just as resourcefully.
